Industrial engineers devise techniques to eliminate wastefulness in the production process. With knowledge and skills in a variety of engineering disciplines, they manage various parts of the production system to maintain internal and national standards as they maximize efficiency and minimize costs.
Historically, other token industrial engineers are: Samuel Colt, pioneer of the assembly line; Eli Whitney, who popularized interchangeable parts in muskets; Henry Ford, who ran the first assembly line to mass produce cars; and Lillian Gilbreth, the mother of modern management that consulted on innovative appliances to better suit the disabled.

Pathway to Becoming an Industrial Engineer
The base requirement to become an industrial engineer is to obtain a bachelor's degree in industrial engineering or a related field of industry-related engineering (e.g. mechanical engineering, electronics engineering, manufacturing engineering, etc.). Some 5- or 6-year cooperative programs can gain a bachelor's, master's and practical experience.
For higher levels of occupational independence in the future, chemical engineers can obtain a Professional Engineer (PE) license. The following must be obtained to get a PE license from the State Board of Professional Engineers:
- a bachelor's degree from a program approved by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET)
- four years of experience working under a licensed Professional Engineer
- and pass the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) Examination
Various other certifications are available to allow the industrial engineer to display their expertise and knowledge of broad ideas such as the Standards Professional Certification from The Society for Standard Professionals or a small variety such as the Fluid Power Systems Designer from the International Fluid Power Society.
