Ingenieros de materiales
Expand the limits of our material reality
Most of the limitations people have are based on the limits on types and quantity of available materials to use in processing. Being able to expand that grasp is the definition of innovation.
Materials engineers develop new materials or improves old ones, focusing on the engineering of utility and working to create and test the components of various products to increase their efficacy. Studying the chemical and physical structures and properties, they are responsible for making things stay together and work. You wouldn't want to put feeble plastic on a racecar going 200mph or poisonous materials on children's toys. Materials engineers make these choices, to put high quality metals and other materials on structures and products in order to make them more efficient and safe in any field, be it oil & natural gas or architecture & construction.
Material engineers can be found in offices and laboratories, designing and testing their components with special equipment for the most effective results. They can specialize in a number of different material types that focus on metallurgical properties to specialty materials.
The number of new materials engineers in the Gulf Coast region is projected to increase by nearly 100 in 2024.
Materials Engineers can earn over DOUBLE the regional median salary
What areas of interest would materials science satisfy?*
These skills, interests, and knowledge areas are recommended for a career in material engineering. Los siguientes datos describen la importancia relativa de cada área del conocimiento/habilidad según la opinión de quienes están en la industria.
Ingeniería y tecnología
Knowledge and interests in practical applications of engineering sciences to apply to the production of construction.
Knowledge of chemical compounds, including their construction, structure, properties, transformations, danger signs, interactions, and disposal methods.
Knowing arithmetic, algebra, geometry, calculus, and their theories to apply them into real world problems.
Knowing and being able to predict physical laws and relationships to understand various dynamic structures and processes.
Production & Processing
Knowing about quality control, production processes, raw goods, costs, and other techniques to maximize efficacy.

Aval de la escuela secundaria: STEM
The base requirement to become a materials engineer is to obtain a bachelor's degree in materials science, engineering, or a related field that focuses on classroom and laboratory work with integrated engineering principles. Getting a graduate degree can be helpful in the long run, so be on the lookout for colleges that will offer a 5-year bachelor's and master's program.
For higher levels of occupational independence in the future, materials engineers can obtain a Professional Engineer (PE) license. The following must be obtained to get a PE license from the State Board of Professional Engineers:
- a bachelor's degree from a program approved by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET)
- four years of experience working under a licensed Professional Engineer
- pass the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) Examination
Various other certifications are available to allow materials engineers to display their qualifications in their specific field. At the core of their qualifications in the healthcare field is the Certified Materials & Resource Professional certification offered by the Association for Healthcare Resource and Materials Management to prove credibility in an increasingly competitive marketplace. The American Petroleum Institute also offers certification for those going into the oil & gas industry that qualifies you as a Welding Inspection and Metallurgy Professional.
