Maestros de educación especial
Teach, adapt, and learn as a special education teacher.
Do you want to help everyone get a chance to learn? Being a special education teacher is the opportunity to work with children and young adults with a wide range of learning, mental, emotional, and physical disabilities. They adapt general education lessons, specific developmental skills, life skills and basic occupational skills to help those with disabilities reach their full potential.
Special education teachers have a unique responsibility to develop Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) for each student tailored to their level of development. Because special education teachers teach at all levels, they need to be flexible in their development and delivery of content. It is especially important for special education teachers to maintain strong lines of communication with the adults in a student's life in order to understand their unique challenges and what if any accommodations are needed to facilitate the learning process.
The Gulf Coast Region will need over 1,500 Special Education Teachers by 2024!
Even Special Education Teachers just starting out make nearly $12,000 above the median for all occupations in the region!

What does it take to be a Special Education Teacher?
Aval de la escuela secundaria: servicio público
Most public schools require a special education teacher to have obtained at least a bachelor's degree in special education or a bachelor's degree in any other area with a minor in special education. It is important to have an education background in special education to understand the different types of disabilities they may encounter and common ways in which to assist, demonstrating their qualifications as a part of the No Child Left Behind (NCLB) standards.
All public schools in the state of Texas require teachers to have a teaching license which can be acquired after completing the exam. Other certifications can be earned as needed dependent upon the types of disability a special education teacher will be working with. Registry of Interpreters of the Deaf offers certification for sign language interpreters and the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards offers Early Childhood through Young Adulthood/Exceptional Needs Specialist certification.
Remember: Each opportunity, public or private, will be slightly different with potentially different requirements. Make sure of the certifications, licensures, and educational requirements specific to whatever position you aim for.
