Design your future
As one of the most diverse engineering disciplines, mechanical engineering covers the design, building, developing, and testing of just about any mechanical device. Regardless of the industry, mechanical engineers are needed because of their diverse knowledge and skillsets to design anything from athletic equipment to power plant systems. Often working with other engineering disciplines, mechanical engineers can be like a connective tissue between engineers due to their broad base of knowledge.
Imagine being able to design whatever you like in any way you like. Does that sound appealing? Then you may have what it takes to be a mechanical engineer!
The number of mechanical engineers in the Gulf Coast region is projected to be near 10,000 by 2026 with an annual job opening of 742.
They start out their careers making over $58,000 more per year over the median annual salary, reaching $130,000 with more experience!
Hay demanda de ingenieros en diferentes industrias.
What areas of interest would mechanical engineering satisfy?*
These skills, interests, and knowledge areas are recommended for a career in mechanical engineering. Los siguientes datos describen la importancia relativa de cada área del conocimiento/habilidad según la opinión de quienes están en la industria.
Ingeniería y tecnología
Knowledge and interests in practical applications of engineering sciences to apply to the production of technologies.
Knowing arithmetic, algebra, geometry, calculus, and their theories to apply them to solving real world problems
Interest in and knowledge of the techniques and tools used for precision drawings, blueprints, and models.
About machines' and tools' designs, uses, repair, and maintenance, for technologies
Knowing and being able to predict physical laws and relationships to understand various dynamic structures and processes

Aval de la escuela secundaria: STEM
Mechanical engineering can be started early with advanced math and science courses in highschool to prep for college!
Becoming a mechanical engineer begins with earning a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering or mechanical engineering technology from an Accreditation Board of Engineering and Technology (ABET) recognized program. These programs will focus less on theory and more on hands-on practical application of engineering technologies. Some colleges will have 5- to 6-year cooperative programs will pad the education alongside working in the field or gaining a master's degree as well. Keep an eye out!
For higher levels of occupational independence in the future, mechanical engineers can obtain a Professional Engineer (PE) license. The following must be obtained to get a PE license from the State Board of Professional Engineers:
- a bachelor's degree from a program approved by ABET
- four years of experience working under a licensed Professional Engineer
- pass the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) Examination
There are a variety of certifications which a mechanical engineer can receive to recognize their skills and dedication in a certain field. Click aquí para conocer más.
